Technical specifications of the new Sony α7S camera

The main novelty in terms of technical characteristics of the α7S camera is the new Exmore 35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor, which allows a very high sensitivity.

With 12.2 effective megapixels, the size of each individual photoreceptor has grown significantly to increase its ability to capture light. Together with the powerful BIONZ X processing engine of the α7S camera, it manages to reduce image noise while increasing the effective sensitivity range of the α7S to ISO 50 – ISO 409600 in expanded mode (ISO 200 – 409600 for video).

These features allow the Sony α7S camera to capture fabulous images in very low light where longer exposure would normally be required. Thanks to the camera’s great sensitivity it is possible to capture crisp, low-noise shots and videos using higher shooting speeds. Its high dynamic range is also ideal for high-contrast scenes, as it can effortlessly handle extreme brightness and rich, deep blacks in the same frame.

Thanks to the extraordinary sensitivity of the image sensor, the amount of light it can collect increases drastically when compared to conventional cameras. The new image sensor gives us a great dynamic range in any condition, from the darkest environments to the brightest sunlight.

The 4K images created by Sony’s α7S camera have amazing detail, surprisingly rich colors and totally natural textures at each shot. Maximized by the BIONZ X processor, high-speed data flow allows the α7S to deliver 4K resolution video through its 4: 2: 2 HDMI- sampled connector for recording on an external storage device or display on a compatible monitor.

Thanks to the full pixel transmission of the entire 35mm full-frame sensor, unwanted effects of moiré and jagged edges present in lower resolution videos are eliminated. It’s surprisingly clear images can be recorded on a Full HD quality memory card in the XAVC S recording format at a bit rate of 50Mbps.

In APS-C mode the α7S supports a high frame rate of 120fps or 100fps with HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels). 120fps recordings can be played at 24p for a 5x slow-motion effect, ideal for viewing every detail of a sports scene or the fastest dance moves.

There is a whole collection of specialized functions to please professional video producers like Picture Profile to open their visual expression and S-Log2 gamma. Functions Timecode/user allow you to edit the workflow to professional style, while the XLR microphone adapter kit allows the acquisition of high-quality audio.

Already tested on the α7R, the high-speed, high-precision Intelligent Auto Focus has been further enhanced to take full advantage of the new and outstanding low-light performance of the camera, as low as EV-4. It also has other features familiar to users of the α7 such as the Tru-Finder XGA OLED high contrast, Wi-Fi / NFC connectivity and compatibility with the growing range of PlayMemories Camera Apps downloadable.

There is also a growing range of α objectives to take full advantage of the almost unlimited creative potential of this camera. Currently, under development, the new range of power zoom 28-13mm F4 lenses, with full-frame E mount will surely appeal to the most demanding video producers.
