Three ways to stop chafing during exercise

When you are exercising, especially for long periods or in warm weather, chafing can become a real problem. Chafing can cause uncomfortable irritation and even painful, raw, red spots on your skin that can make it difficult to keep moving. Here are our three top tips to keep chafing from ruining your exercise routine.

Choose the Right Clothing

One of the most effective ways to avoid chafing during exercise is to choose clothing and gear that fit well and are made from materials designed to reduce friction against your skin, such as moisture-wicking fabrics like polyester or nylon blends. Cotton tends to hold sweat and become uncomfortable.

Many athletes swear by anti chafing shorts, which fit snugly and help reduce skin-to-skin contact or fabric rubbing during movement. These shorts will often feature seamless designs or flat seams to stop irritation for anyone prone to chafing.

Lubricate Your Skin

Applying a lubricant before your workout can be a game-changer. A petroleum jelly, an anti-chafing balm, moisturiser or body powder can all create a thin barrier on your skin that reduces friction. Be sure to apply the lubricant to high-risk areas like inner thighs, underarms, or anywhere your clothing might rub.

For maximum protection, many athletes will pair their lubricants with wearing anti chafing shorts from Better Tights, to properly prevent irritation.

Stay Cool and Dry

Sweat is one of the main reasons behind chafing, because wet skin tends to stick and rub more easily. To stop this, try to exercise in cool, shaded spaces whenever possible. If you’re exercising indoors, make sure there’s good airflow or air con, or use a fan to keep air circulating, which will help keep you cool.

You can also use towels to dab away sweat and keep your skin dry during breaks. Don’t rub, as this will make any chafing worse. After your workout, shower as soon as you can to wash away salt and bacteria that can worsen any irritation.

Staying hydrated will also help because it helps regulate your inner body temperature and prevents you from sweating excessively.
